August 2022

August is historically the best month for really big Halibut (talking 150+), it is also normally the rainiest month in Homer and it is the month when we will normally do everything on spinning gear salmon, rockfish, halibut and salmon. SILVERS SILVERS SILVERS SILVERS thats where the action is and this AUGUST has been above average for Silver salmon.

SILVERS AND KINGS!!

The silvers have moved from the outercoast to the southern inlet and they just keep getting bigger and bigger. Little known fact….when silver salmon first show up from the Gulf of Alaska in July they all weigh around 5-6lbs but by the time they hit the rivers they can push 20lbs. That means they can put on 2lbs a week!!!

All Kings this time of year are feeders mostly from SE Alaska or British Columbia.

August usually means calm seas, when the seas are calm we are able to get where all the species are as you can see in the photo here we caught all our salmon, halibut and about 75% of our rockfish.

With so much action happening in Cook Inlet away from the outer coast rockpiles, we have been focusing on limits of salmon and halibut first and then picking up rockfish either in the bay or near Flat Island at the end of the day.

Check out the seas in this photo! Glassy everywhere all day long!!

With so much going on in the Inlet with the salmon, we have been finding fast fishing at the Sand Waves and the western trench for halibut.

Ken Mitchell and his group with a great catch of halibut all caught on light tackle!! The Barrens in August is the best place around to shoot halibut.
