August 2023

When people ask me what is your favorite time of year to fish, I used to say May, because we used to be able to consistently catch big buts in 25ft of water but last couple years the shallow water game has been slow so now I am starting to change my answer to August. August is when historically we have caught the largest halibut of the year every year. August is when salmon fishing is so good it’s stupid. August is typically wet but calm. August is when Silver Salmon show up and you can finally start catching limits of silvers without trolling. This August has been one of the best I have had in my 17yrs of charter fishing in Alaska.

5 men with 3 large halibut and 2 large kings on the back of the F/V Obsession

One of the best loads of the year.

3 buts over 100lbs, 2 kings over 25lbs epic day.

two men with two large halibut on the deck of the Obsession

Long time client John Thompson with an epic but caught in Jurassic Park.

I usually dont fish the inlet much until August when the Silvers are in force. But occasionally we see some truly BIG halibut come from the Western Inlet.

Captain Travis's Family with a days catch of Salmon and Rockfish in Dogfish Bay

Brother and Sister Inlaw came up for a week and we took them out to catch the kind of fish we love to eat most.
